Event Profile: Lake Oswego, an attractive arts oriented suburb of Portland, Oregon, is celebrating its 47th annual Festival of the Arts. The Festival is a major regional arts event presenting the creative endeavors of recognized and emerging artists and enjoys an outstanding reputation for bringing special exhibits of quality and diversity to a weekend that is accessible to everyone. Attracting some 25,000 visitors during the three days of the event, the Festival includes several art exhibits, food booths, music, and a Craft Faire and in 2010 will feature a special international juried and invitational show of encaustic art.
Luminous Layers
Exploring Contemporary Encaustic
The 47th Annual Lake Oswego Festival of the Arts presents as its cornerstone exhibit Luminous Layers: Exploring Contemporary Encaustic, the most comprehensive exhibit of encaustic paintings and sculpture assembled in the Pacific Northwest. Encaustic is one of the oldest forms of painting where beeswax, resin and pigment are layered and fused to produce a luminous surface that captures and transforms light. Nationally recognized artists melt, layer, scrape, and sculpt, creating their visions in wax. Lectures, displays, and demonstrations featuring some of these leading artists will explore the techniques of this art form throughout the three-day Festival.
Featured Artists
The exhibit will feature the works of leading regional, national, and international encaustic artists such as: Jeff Schaller, Cari Hernandez, Natasia Chan, Molly Cliff-Hilts, Kevin Frank, Eileen Goldenberg, Jane Guthridge, Deborah Kapoor, Lisa Kaser, Kimberly Kent, Brenda Mallory, Alexandre Masino, Laura Moriarty, Catherine Nash, Jane Allen Nodine, Joan Stuart Ross, Thea Schrack, Andrea Schwartz-Feit, Randall Steeves, Amy Stoner, Elise Wagner, Linda Womack, Daniella Woolf and Gregory Wright.
Juried Exhibit:
There will also be a special juried portion of the exhibit open by application to all encaustic artists.This portion of the exhibit will be juried by featured artist Cari Hernandez; Tom Burns, publisher and founder of Artworks Magazine; and Kristina Butters, the director of sales and marketing at Butters Gallery in Portland,Oregon.
Curators:
The overall curator for this special encaustic exhibit is Portland area encaustic artist and author, Linda Womack. Assistant curators are Natasia Chan, Kimberly Kent and Amy Stoner.
